Points of Interest in Willaimsport
C & O Canal – The C & O Canal is a National Park under the control of the Federal Park Service. The Cushwa Basin, Lock House, Aqueduct, and Lock located in Williamsport in close proximity to each other allow visitors to witness first hand one of the most famous channels of commerce in the United States. Visitors can visit all of these sites by taking an enjoyable walk on the towpath along the C & O Canal which looks much like it did in the 19th century during its heyday. The Cushwa Basin is also a great point of entry for hiking, biking, horseback riding, and fishing.
River Bottom Park – This park which is adjacent to the C & O Canal National Park is owned and maintained by the Town and is a great place to camp, stop, or picnic along the banks of the Potomac River. A boat ramp allows boaters access to the River. This park provides its visitors with a great opportunity to relax and take in the natural beauty of point where the Conococheague Creek and the Potomac River come together. Springfield Farm and Museum – Just turn off of Potomac Street onto Springfield Lane to see why George Washington frequented Williamsport. The Town has restored the historic barn and is in the process of restoring the farmhouse. Visit the museum located in the barn and operated by the History and Museum Board to observe first hand the rich heritage and history of Williamsport.
Byron Memorial Park – Many would say that this Park is one of the loveliest public parks in Washington County. It is the home of Conococheague Little League, the Williamsport Pool, Williamsport Community Center, the local Boy Scout Troop, and Williamsport Memorial Library. The Park is the site of an outstanding annual 4 th of July Celebration, Williamsport Days in late August, concerts by the talented Williamsport Community Band and other groups, Christmas Light Display, car shows, carnivals, weddings, picnics, and family reunions. Williamsport Memorial Library – This library, now a part of the Washington County Free Library System, is a great place to visit, obtain reading material, do research, or just relax and read. Erected in 1936 as a memorial to 14 local High School students who lost their lives in a tragic bus accident near Rockville, Maryland, the facility has just been renovated making it even more attractive.
Doubleday’s Hill/Riverview Cemetery – Abner Doubleday set up a battery of artillery at this site which overlooks the Potomac River and the Conococheague Creek during the Civil War. The site is located in Riverview Cemetery which is the place of burial of many family members of the original residents of the Town.
Potomac River/Conococheague Creek – These two tributaries flow together in Williamsport and are great places to boat and fish.
Shops, Restaurants, etc. – Stroll the streets of our historic Town. Visit our unique and interesting stores and take in a meal at one of the restaurants. Williamsport is also close to the Valley Mall, Prime Outlets, affordable lodging, and the Historical sites of Washington County.
